After high school my son, Tim, and his best friend John Doyle (called just ‘Doyle’ ) saved enough money for a trip to Europe. Doyle had relatives living in Ireland and their plan was to make their farm home base and make excursions from there.
The plan worked for about two months, they tried to get green cards to get odd jobs and extend their stay. The world was in the midst of an economic depression and Ireland didn’t feel the need to have two Americans wandering their island taking the odd job. As a result they ran out of money. Once day I received a call from Tim, he needed $500 to get a flight home. I wired him the money and within a week he and Doyle were back in Wisconsin looking for a job. As part of his thank you for bailing him out of Ireland, Tim brought me a stack of Irish newspapers. He thought I would enjoy reading papers from Ireland. I’ve never understood what gave him that notion but it caused a euphoric moment for me. In 1997 Ireland was still a year away from approving the Good Friday Agreement that ended The Troubles. The papers carried stories of civil violence and atrocities. One story in particular caught my attention. A ten year old girl was maimed in a ‘peace zone’ in Belfast. The government had created areas between the walls that separate Catholics and Protestants that were neutral zones where no violence was to take place. Neither the Protestants nor the Catholics accepted the peace zones because they were imposed on them from the British government. From that story I began to imagine what it would feel like for a family to have their daughter injured while just playing outside – being in the wrong place and the wrong time. That became the major incident that I built the story of Murphy’s Troubles around. In the front cover of Murphy’s Troubles in the Appreciation Section I thank Tim for bringing me those newspapers.

I took a month off from fiction writing after completing the first draft of my second novel. I’ve vacillated on a title but recently have settled on Out of Darkness, at least for the time being.
While I took a month off from fiction writing I didn’t stop working as a writer, I continued my blog, my Extra Innings column and most important, researched self-editing a novel. Of course, I would never take on editing by myself. I will hire the same copyeditor and proofreader, Christine Keleny, who worked with me on Murphy’s Troubles. I am also working with my dear friend and mentor, Marshall Cook on story development and novel structure. About a week ago I sent Marshall the first three chapters to read. As usual, he gave me thorough, thoughtful comments – three pages worth of detailed review. The last line of his review said it all. “After studying these comments I think it would be a good idea to re-write the first chapter. I hope you agree.” I felt like a train that just derailed. I didn’t need to tinker with this or that I need a complete re-write. I studied his comments and read my manuscript together so that I could learn from his analysis. Of course, Marshall is right, the chapter needed to be re-written. I spent three days re-writing that one chapter and have sent it to Marshall for critique. This experience has taught me that I misjudged the time I’ll need to edit a 97,000 word novel. The first chapter is absolutely critical and I may need to change the point of view, meaning a complete overhaul. I am thankful that I have someone like Marshall to help me learn the craft. I need to get on the right track. As with most serious independent authors/publishers I worked very hard to create a high quality book for my readers. I worked with a graphic designer to design a striking, eye catching cover, and I’ve received a number of compliments for the cover.
I researched the type and color of paper to use in the book and the type and size of the font. I have been satisfied with the high quality of the paper and the font. I hired a content editor, copyeditor and proofreader to work with me to guarantee the quality of the final book. The proofreader was instructional, I knew nothing about semi colons; and, was inspired to take a grammar refresher after my book was published. I was fortunate that the copy editor provided line edits which add polish to my book. The content editor convinced me to introduce one character much earlier in the story and to revise the ending. All of these changes, I believe, improved the quality of my book. Once the file was uploaded to Create Space I received a hard edition of the book to edit. It was both a thrill and a chore to look for all the little proof reading errors. I chose to make the edits myself to the electronic file. I edited my book three more times on the electronic file. Having completed four proofreading edits I was both exhausted from the process and ready to launch my book into the world. After receiving my complimentary order of books, I just looked at it in wonder. I never thought about giving it one more read for proofreading errors. I “trusted” that it was perfect. Recently, to prepare for my Tuesday Morning Book Talk discussion of, Murphy’s Troubles, there on page 3 was a proofreading error. This was the error: ‘Do they think with their arses’?’ What an obvious flaw, I was horrified. There was another error on page 10, 17, 20, etc. I decided to read my own book specifically for proofreading errors and I found forty-six! When I shared my discovery with my wife even she said: “That’s a lot.” She has a reputation for understatement. I wondered why no one had ever said anything to me. None of the people who posted a review on Amazon said anything. The professional reviewer at Inkspots, Karyn Saemann, didn’t mention the problem. Were they all trying to be kind? I don’t need that type of kindness. I am embarrassed. I contacted Create Space and I was able to correct the errors for only $55.00. I’ve requested a hard copy proof to review, trying to proof from a document is just too difficult. I have learned a very valuable lesson. I must never again let the thrill of excitement of publication to let me waiver in ensuring the next book is blemish free. This month I will complete the rough draft of my second novel and I am a full month ahead of my original schedule to complete this draft. After publishing Murphy’s Troubles in November 2013 there was no question that I would continue writing novels. However, the exuberance of publishing that first novel, having to hold in your hands and having launch parties at our local coffee shop and public library was distracting.
In January I decided it was time to get serious and begin thinking about what I wanted to write about next. I had seen a PBS program about the Fenian movement in America and its leader John Devoy. Devoy is a fascinating character who reinvented himself in New York City after being expelled from Ireland for his Fenian activities. I spent months researching his history, in particular, an audacious mission he financed to rescue six Irish Fenians from a prison in Australia. After researching for several months I tried for months to write the story and each attempt failed. Something was missing and I didn’t know what. One night I had a dream and the protagonist in Murphy’s Troubles, Ian Padraic Murphy let me know that his story wasn’t finished. The entire plot for my second novel came to me at one time. I sat down and began to write. It wasn’t easy. I struggle with point of view. I came up with the brilliant idea of writing a fictional memoir. I was proud of my inventiveness at creating a new genre. I floated the idea past my friend and mentor, Marshall Cook and he was moderately encouraging but warned that my path was fraught with numerous obstacles. I distracted myself with researching how to write a memoir. The year was slipping by and in early May I didn’t have ten pages done one my second novel. Panic set in. I was frustrated with how to write a fictional memoir and what I originally thought would be clever and unique was proving to be a horrendous waste of time. Then, out of nowhere I reviewed the last scene of Murphy’s Troubles and imagined what would happen next. I solved the problem of point of view – to use the standard first person. My writing was unleashed. Finally, I had the plot and point of view but then fear crept into my psyche and I stalled. I have always been self-motivated and most comfortable when I have a goal to work toward. I decided that the second novel should be about the same length as the first, about 84,000 words. Next I decided to finish the first draft by the end of November. Finally, I determined how many words a week I needed to write to meet that goal. The last step, and the key, was to bury the internal editor in me and force myself not to edit my writing. Eureka! I found my path. The writing flowed and every week I exceeded my word count target and I’m a month ahead of schedule. I should be elated, but I’m not. Instead I find myself feeling sad. The time when I can write without abandon is almost over. In November, editing begins the crafting. The days of freewill writing are over. It was 4:15 pm on Sunday afternoon at the Irish Book and Music Celebration held at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. For authors selling books the event was to end at 4:30. The day had been slow, sold a few books, but met a lot of nice people.
I’ve learned that people like to talk with authors. They like to have you tell them in a few words what the novel is about. They ask what inspired the story. They ask how much research was done to write the story and a myriad of other questions. Almost all customers also like to share something of their lives while demonstrating at least a passing interest in buying the book. Because this event was at the Irish American Heritage Center, every customer had a story about relatives in Ireland in their past or many are still living in Ireland. Customers like to browse and thoroughly enjoy the variety provided by a group of seventeen authors selling their wares. The variety available included: self-help books, historical fiction based on actual family members; young adult books, fairy books, academic books on Irish music, the real life story of father-son cops an Irish grandmother’s real life adventures and general fiction. On the second day of the event I put copies of a review my book received from a professional reviewer – Inkspots Review. I noted that people would pick up a copy and read the review rather than pick up the book and read the back of the book blurb. It proved to me that knowing what another reader thought of the book is more influential than learning about the book yourself when making a decision to buy. The last customer didn’t do any of these things. She looked at the poster of the front book cover and asked where it took place. “The protagonist, Ian Murphy, lives in Cork” I said. “Where in Cork?” She asked. “Cork City.” I said. “Well, you know Cork is the name the County too. It’s a big county.” “Yes, it’s a big county.” I responded. I couldn’t tell where this conversation was going. “He lives in West Cork.” I offered. “What street?” She asked. I couldn’t remember. That’s the sort of thing an author should remember. I was tired enough and in shock over the cross examination, I couldn’t remember. I thought I should be honest. “Well, at this moment I don’t recall, but I took the time to research the geography on Google maps, it’s an area were an author’s cottage could be.” She picked up the book and looked at it. “Well, how long are you going to be here?” “Until 4:30.” “Ok, I might be back.” Of course, she never came back. I failed her test. In all the events I’ve attended this year I’ve never had a customer cross examine me on some detail of the book. I suppose she was testing me, to see if I knew my stuff. What I don’t understand was how that made any difference to the story. She wasn’t interested in the story; I think she was interested in quizzing me. Later that evening I thought if I had had my wits about me I should have responded, it’s a fiction. He lives on a fictional street. I’m guessing she would have responded, “Oh” and walked away but I’ll never know. The title of the blog is the discussion question for an author’s panel I will participate in at the Irish Book and Music Celebration in Chicago October 3-5, www.ibam.com. Last week I shared some of my preliminary research on the topic and asked any readers to offer their view on the discussion question. One author friend did respond, congratulating me on attending IBAM but not offering any suggestions.
I don’t like reading research on line so I print everything out. After reading and when I no longer need the material I cut it up to make homemade notepaper then recycle the paper when its use as a notepad ends. Frugal, I know. The point is I have about an inch thick research material that I’ve plowed through. Quite a lot of the material is very academic and while I’m sure it’s excellent analysis doesn’t really help me answer the question. Then I found a site where Frank Delaney provided his list of top 10 Irish novels. I think this is a gold mine, especially since I’m anticipating his participation in the author discussion. I did better on this list having read 7 out of ten. It is interesting that only author – James Joyce – is on both lists. I am a member of several LinkedIn discussion groups and my next step is to pose the question to each group. They’re a lively bunch and I’m sure I’ll get responses. Once again, this week, I’m appealing to all my blog readers – let me know why you think Irish literature has universal appeal – and, if you don’t agree that Irish literature does have universal appeal – let me know why. In February I terminated my contract with Mischievous Muse Press to begin the journey to self-publication. Since then the book cover has been completely redesigned and the back of the book blurb tossed and re-written.
The first edit the manuscript had was a substantive edit by my friend and mentor Marshall Cook. As a result I added two chapters and re-wrote the last chapter, dramatically changing the ending of the book. Marshall convinced me that making the last paragraph of the book a cliff hanger just wasn’t fair to the reader. Of course, he’s right. Next, my website: www.rexowens.us had a complete make-over. I actually hired a pro to provide me with an analysis and make specific recommendations for change. I accepted all the recommendations and in a single month saw a 25% jump in hits. It took quite a while for me to find a compatible copyeditor/proofreader. In August I found Christine Keleny of www.ckbookspublishing.com, who lives in a small town right here in Dane County, Wisconsin. Christine provided both insightful copyediting and line proofreading. It has taken me about a month to review Christine’s recommendations and incorporate about 98% of them (Christine would prefer I write out all numerals). In September I also took a one day brush- up course on grammar and punctuation because my experience with Christine was proof it would be beneficial for me. I am now on the brink of publication. First, I will be doing technical editing on formatting and consistency in the manuscript. Then will come the day that I upload the manuscript to Create Space. Recently, Create Space is offering more options on what is called interior design. I want to take my time to get the “look” that I want for the book. Create Space will also send me a hard copy galley to review and make final changes. Then, the hour will arrive in October when MURPHY’S TROUBLES is published. I want to choose a date for publication that coincides with a significant event in the history of the Provisional Irish Republican Army. Right now I’m leaning toward 27 October (1980) the day the first Hunger Strike began. I’m at the stage of self-publication to need copyediting/proofreading services. I asked one of my writing teachers for a recommendation for a local person and received one. I dashed off an e-mail to learn if the person was currently available to take on another client. The response I received corrected me; she was a line editor, not a copy editor or proofreader. I thought the response was a bit high minded but the description of the services made sense. Her fee was $45/hr which was within the range I had researched on line for this type of service. She asked for the first chapter of my novel and I sent a file on July 6th.
The first chapter is six pages, about 1830 words. How long can it take to read those few pages and make a proposal? It took three follow-up e-mails to receive a response on July 21st. She estimated she would charge $200 for the first six pages. At that rate line editing my novel would cost over $9000! After reading just six pages she concluded: I’m at the beginning stages of the novel and stated: “My strong suggestion is to take a class in constructing the short story –this will strengthen your understanding of how to avoid cultural stereotypes and produce a complex protagonist who is a real individual; how to stick to a strictly internal POV; how to introduce back-story convincingly; and above all, how to expose conflict gradually, instead of all at once.” Guess what? The editor teaches short story writing. Also, the editor has only published short stories, never a full length novel. The critique is harsh and not transparent in being self-serving to attempt to get me to take one or more of her short story classes. I understand that short story writing is a difficult and unique form in the writing profession. I’m not writing a short story, it’s a novel. A short story is a song while a novel is a symphony. Her comments also convinced me she hasn’t kept up with current teaching on novel writing such as Donald Maass’s, WRITING THE BREAKHOUT NOVEL, where he implores authors to have conflict dripping on every page. While her response was both subtle and tactful it still had the affect of slicing and dicing my novel to shreds. Where is her support for a first time novelist? She broke the cardinal rule of critique, praise the good and make suggestions for improvement. I admit at first reading her comments were devastating and sent me into deep depression. With this blog I’m exorcising her from my psyche and moving on. I’ll find an editor I can work with. I have not posted a blog since early November 2012 because I was waiting to hear from my publisher when Murphy’s Troubles would be launched. In late November I received an e-mail telling me while originally planned for publication in 2012 it would not be published until early 2013. The 2rd week of January I wrote my publisher at e-mail asking when my novel would be scheduled for publication since I submitted edits to the galley August 1, 2012. I received a terse e-mail response that the publisher hadn’t received the galley back from the editor (I was not allowed to have contact with the editor – the publisher claimed it was their policy to retain the independence of the editor). The publisher refused to offer a publication date stating: “. . . when a book is ready to be published it tells us.” The publisher also informed me that more money has been spent on my novel than any other title in their catalog and I needed to be patient. My journey with the micro publisher in California began in December 2010 and now it was time to end it. On January 28th I sent the publisher a registered letter terminating the contract. It is now time to follow a new path. I would never consider using a vanity press but do want to explore self-publishing with either Create Space or Ingram. Recently I learned that I can use Create Space for publication, distribution and marketing and still submit the book to Ingram for distribution because I retain the rights of the work. So, I am embarking on the self-publication journey. When you take on a task such as this you find out who your friends are right away. One friend, a retired Journalism professor has agreed to be my editor. Another friend has agreed to design a new book cover. When asked how I felt about terminating a contract with a traditional publisher and venturing on the self-publication path my immediate response was – relief. I am now totally responsible for all aspects of bringing my historical novel to the world, I am up to the task and energized. My target – a September release of Murphy’s Troubles. Join me on the journey. Give me your comments, suggestions, thoughts, what to avoid and what not to avoid. What is deep revision in a novel? Deep revision occurs after your draft is complete, you set it aside for a few weeks and then read it from start to finish. In the reading you’re looking for what moves the story along, what stalls the story, is the timeline consistent, are the characters authentic and believable. This isn’t copy editing. With MURPHY’S TROUBLES by deep revision was to kill off a character early in the book. I had written a relationship between the protagonist, Ian Murphy and his school days friend, Timolty Doyle. While interesting to me their friendship through adulthood didn’t move the story along, in fact it stalled it. My solution? I had Timolty die in an IRA bombing in Belfast when he’s 20. Ian mourning his friend’s death wants revenge and joins the IRA. My deep revision was to have Timolty’s death motivate Ian to action which moves the story in the direction it needed to take.
