Research for Murphy’s Troubles
My research falls into three distinct categories. First, there’s reading about the history of Ireland, specifically the IRA and the Troubles. The “bible” is Tim Pat Coogan’s, The IRA. Another excellent source is Michael Collins and the Troubles by Ulick O’Connor. Of course, I relied on Google for carrying a heavy load for chronologies, newspaper accounts and biographies. The second type of research was to make sure I was accurate in place names, streets, geographic features, food, customs and names for characters. I used Google exclusively for this research. These little details make the book authentic and accurate. The final research was to read novels about Ireland, it’s history, and the story of the Troubles from an author’s perspective. I read widely including: Tipperary by Frank Delaney; Amongst Women by John McGahern; The Human Season by Louise Dean; Rebels of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd and everything by Edna O’Brien. While not an exhaustive list this sample provides a flavor. It’s important to know that my approach was to intentionally make actual historical figures minor characters that interact with the fictional characters. Often the historical characters are not given their name but by their description and actions the reader will discern who the person is. The fictional characters drive the story, live the plot and take action in historical events. My view of historical fiction is that it is fiction first and history second. It is a story wrapped in history and explores one or more themes. I am not interested in explaining history, guessing at motives people had for their actions, or using story to justify events.

Have you been to Ireland? After I'd completed my first draft of Chasing the Strawberr Moon, my husband and I drove the entire route from Minneapolis to Okanogan and had a few surprises. As a result I revised some of locations for the events and changed the names of several locations of towns.
